Well, from what's in the manga, she's both the 'Wretched Egg' and the 'Red Man', even though that still doesn't clarify much. My best guess is that it was one of those 'doing random experiments on a kid'- type situations. Well, I suspect it's more than that, but that's the general idea.
And on an unrelated side note, I am way too excited about the anime

 Sorry...crap way of justifying it.... I would says she is the origin of deadmen, or something like that.

Whatever she is, she's not normal. But I think both personalities are infatuated with Ganta...it appears the nutso personality appeared when they were children but it didn't seem so psycho. If you notice when the murderous personality awoke to fight the old man it turned down pudding...the same thing happened in Ganta's flashback when he offered Shiro pudding. That same personality kicked the dog and looked embarrased saying the Aceman phrase...
Interesting... Reminds me of Change 123.

Reminds me of Elfen Lied. Being the whole split between Phsyco and Nice and phsyco still liking main char dude. I certainly hope the same thing dosent happen to her that happen to Nyu :[
