Default Here's what Josei actually means:

I had previously thought that Josei had to do with romance for older women, or more mature romance, but:

Josei
: 女性 【じょせい】
(n.) woman.

Demographic indicator for anime and manga aimed at women. One of the rarest forms of anime, a significant proportion of josei anime/manga appears to fall under the category of "yaoi." Although there are some housewife/family/young mother stories in manga format in Japan, non-yaoi josei is relatively underpublicized in the West. Popular examples of non-yaoi josei include Paradise Kiss and Honey and Clover.

... It would help if you put in an easier form to understand rather then copying it from wikipedia (i suspect) but Im guessing it's a form of yaoi even lighter then shonen-ai? Cause, Karneval, Are you Alice, and +C: Sword and Cornett are all josei (I think) and dont really even seem like shonen-ai. Maybe Im wrong?

Just because yaoi is aimed at women, doesn't mean it automatically falls under the josei demographic and vice versa.
Josei manga is, to put it simply, the more mature equivalent of shoujo, the way seinen is to shonen. It most commonly involves romance, but not always. Olimpos and #000000 - Ultra Black are good examples of non-romance josei. Oh, and 07-Ghost, too. /they all run in the same magazine as Karneval/
Wikipedia is the place to get the wrong information, especially on such topics, since anyone can edit it..

Yeah, it is.
It's suppose to be aimed at women from about 18 to 30 years old, thou it's doesn't necessarily involve romance.

Zero-Sum is josei? Funny, cuz as far as what I've read from that magazine, the series are far from mature, same goes for Karneval.

More mature than shoujo doesn't make it equal to seinen, for example. And "mature" is a whole different matter, it's a genre / demographic / whatever on it's own.

Hmm...well, in a literal sense, "shoujo" means "girl" while "josei" means "woman" in Japanese. Like someone said earlier, if "shoujo" mangas are directed towards girls aged 12-17 or so, then "josei" mangas are directed towards women aged 18-30. Any age group can read either one, though, it doesn't really matter. I read all sorts of mangas from both genres, and to me it seems that shoujo mangas are GENERALLY more light, frequently taking place in a school setting, whether it's high school or middle school (occasionally elementary school). Meanwhile, josei mangas are generally a little deeper, or darker, or lighthearted but in a more "mature" way. Some seem to show more mature themes, too, like murder or strong violence. The main character is usually a little older, too, for example a college student or a working woman, but not always.

As for Karneval, I'm not really sure why it would be in the josei category...Maybe the story gets darker or really deep as it progresses? I think it COULD be in the shoujo category as well, depending on what happens throughout the storyline. But it's true there are shounen-ai SHOUJO mangas...shounen-ai isn't always josei...YAOI would most definitely be in the josei category though.

But it is easy to see why this manga is placed under josei all of Gereki theif companions all die in the first chapter. This is something that normally does not happen in Shoujo mangas. I rather like josei mangas since the main character is not always a girl and they focous on other plot topics besides romance. But don't get me wrong I love my romance.
