If you can remember that girl who disappeared? well at the end Ichijo's mother told her husband that one lady lost her baby (that girl that disappeared)

The way I think is that only Ichijo was born or survived, because they only say one mother was saved and she was ready to give birth.

A lot of people say they all were born because Sou and Ichijo met in real life...I don't think so. Yes the boy looks like Sou but real Sou had more masculine features than this boy. Whether the artist didn't make Sou the exact same looking for her reasons or she did bad drawing of him in real life. To me, and I'm artist too, I can tell he looks like Sou but, I get the feeling it's not him. Whether the boy was drawn this way on purpose or not.

That was an GREAT analysis. The ending actually had me a bit puzzled before reading this thread.

Though I do wish to disagree with you that everyone else died and that boy isn't Sou.

1. It wasn't said that ONLY one mother was saved but "we have an expectant..." so there may have been more than just her.

2. Yes, Sou looks different but Ichijo also looks different.

Perhaps I just want a happy ending (so not like me)

I believe that they are all reborn. In the end the nurse did say that it was going to be different, different people and situations. Meaning that they are all reborned, only the story between them will never be the same one.

I think they were all reborn - a soul shouldn't be able to "die" because a soul is more than a physical manifestation.

The bodies they would originally have been born into died due to the fire, so those forms had to come apart and disappear. But when you take into account the mere concept of rebirth, it means the souls simply went into new, different bodies to continue the cycle. There cannot be an end in this particular sort of circumstance - they don't refer to it as simply birth, but rebirth. Reincarnation.

The others who didn't survive would of course have to be younger than those who graduated over the course of the story, but had to wait for new forms to be chosen to hold the same souls.

Sou, having different parents, would have to look different; however for the sake of readers, the soul's body would have to remain similar enough that at least WE would recognize and understand the significance of the boy on the train.
