They already did - it was implied in the prequel's last chapter (the one where Kaidoh and Momo took over the club). My guess is that the sequel's timeline confused you... it takes place in the fall season, months after the end of the National tournament. That's why Tezuka and co. are still present.  Hope this clears things up.
