well... the title says it all =) I've been thinking of it -.- can't find an answere >.< so plz help here!!!
The order of the .hack// series!!

As far as I know, things started back in .Hack//Fragment (a prototype of the current "The World". There was never a manga or anime about it. It's just related to the current problems). After that .Hack//Sign started and shortly after .Hack//XXXX. These two were on the same timeline and .Hack//Sign ended shortly near the end of .Hack//XXXX as they were happening at the same time. A bit afterwards, .Hack//Legend of the Twilight supposedly came after XXXX (althought its unknown if this is canonical). And 7 years later GU started.

3 years after GU (altogether 10 years after XXXX and Sign) .Hack//Link began. That is the timeline

That's what I concluded so far. Although u forgot to play the video games which add so much to the story after .hack//sign.
NOT the .hack//GU video games, there were 4 previous games that explain what happens after sign which I think is .hack//xxxx but just slightly different details. You forgot to read the novels. .hack//AI Buster
Two novels.
Do not forget the short .hack//liminality series (only 4 episodes). It takes place at teh same time as the video games. Oh, and most importantly, .hack//roots!

I suggest you wiki .hack//wiki. Legend of the Twilight manga is canon, the anime is not. Last time I checked XXXX was not canon.

Those are the main bodies. Now there are other side stories and short stories that will be hard for you to get unless you can read Japanese or get lucky on the internet. Such as GnU, Cell, Alcor. I dont know the exact place those fit in because I was never a big fan of R2 (Although a quick check at wiki will tell me). And there are cases like AI buster 2 where the stories take place at various times in the series. Once again, check .hack//wiki.

XXXX, Twilight Anime, and G.U. + are the big ones that, at last checked, are not canon.

So it's pretty much the timeline it gives you at the start of the .hack books, with kite and blackrose's adventures.

I still don't understand... am i supposoed to play the game, watch the anime & read the mangas?? this is the most complicated thing ever.. i can't do this.. and why are the years all going into the future? all the way until 2020.. i haven't started any of this so maybe it'll make sense when i do? i don't know what to do~!!!!!!!! ok so its in this order..
