So, in the last chapter, Haruka Sensei said something to the effect of: "even tho she was protecting the child of Ai and Ikuru, the artificial womb was destroyed, and the tiny life had disappeared in front of her". So then what's with the child in the machine? Did I miss something?

Sorry but I can't help because I didn't understand that part. I read the story because it was interesting but I hated it the art so maybe that is the reason why I didn't really get into this story. I guess I needed to see more drawings to illustrate the story better but since I didn't like the art that wouldn't have helped me much. However, I almost cried at the end even though I wanted a better ending. I didn't like the way in which Ikuru died so tragic.

Although he did die tragically, he died happily knowing that Ai loved him, and that they'll be ghosts together. Even if he didn't die in the bombing, he would have died from his health not long after anyway, so either way, it was a nice ending.
Plus their daughter have a bright future ahead of her
