Hard to believe no one is talking about this great series by urasawa
Synopsis by wikipedia

-Growing older is pretty rough and Kenji is finding out just how hard it can be as life starts wearing down on him. On top of trying to make ends meet running a convenience store he has to care for the niece that his missing sister left in his care. Memories of youth make it easier, until those memories come back to haunt him.

Kenji and his old friends are slowly being drawn into a mysterious conspiracy that could threaten the world. Who is the mysterious "Friend" and how does he tie into Kenji's youth? Why are there disappearances and deaths tied into Ochanomizu University? Their memories hold the keys to the puzzle, but time and age have clouded their minds.

The strange occurrences and the reach of the "Friend" conspiracy grow by the day. It will all culminate on New Year's Eve 2000. Will Kenji and the others be able to put together the puzzle and save the world?

so lets discuss for those that have read it, or those that are intrigued

URASAWA ROCKS!!!! he is probably my fav mangaka!!!! first i was hooked with the anime of monster, later with 20th century boys and pluto!!! He is a master of thriller...like King and I think I read somewhere that 20th century boys had some inpiration sources from Stephen king's books....

however...is the volume 22 really the end?? ( I mean the end of the series...20th and 21st century boys together....)???? because then....I don't think I understood a thing then!!!

Looking for a good seinen?? try Urasawa..

I'm also quite confused about the ending. I didn't understand a thing. I probably have to reread the entire series. I understand who the first "Friend" was, but the second one completely eludes me. I don't understand it at all. If anyone could explain it to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hm.. Since it is a discussion thread, what do you guys think about the bending spoons ability thing? Most of the other stuff is true to life (with a stretch of course), but the bending spoons thing is just really supernatural. It reminded me of the scene from the matrix.

Default Awesome

I loved this manga series and the other one he wrote called Monster. Can anyone name a few other series the mangaka has completed so I can scope them out?

I'm about to finish it (in volume 20). I love it. Urasawa writes the best seinen; all his manga is so addicting to read.

Oh man. This is probably the best manga I've read that have stretched out this far. I mean the other manga that stretches out this far is so repetitive (Inuyasha, Naruto, etc.) But anyway, this is my first Urusawa manga series. I'm gonna read some more of her series.

The second friend was:

The boy who supposedly died dissecting carp.

We've learned with the FIRST Friend that he's capable of manipulating his peers in different ways, making one create evil bacteria, another to be his scape goat, so its no surprise he made another to "appear dead". The First Friend takes advantage of people's loneliness and struggles hence his name, but it obviously didnt work on Kenji for long for he had real true friends. Get it? =)
