Both the anime and manga are excellent. Of course there are some differences, but unlike another adaptations from manga to anime, this seems natural, not a forced history. Big differences though, still both are excellent.

I've recently started watching the anime, didn't know there was a manga until now. what i want to know, does the anime trail off the manga or are they more or less the same. there are many manga adapted into anime but the anime sometimes tend to trail off the manga, and make up new stories with the same characters. those who've read the manga and seen the anime, is the anime far off from the manga or are there just minor changes? is the storyline the same as in the anime?

The manga was being written as the anime was being made. The manga goes a bit farther by having Hachi get to Jupiter, but the ending and sentiments are basically the same. One of the best series I ever read (and watched), I just wish there was more!

Certainly one of the best animated animes out there.

Now, in terms of anime vs. manga, the ANIME is by far one of the best produced animes ever. It completely blows away the manga. If you have scene the anime, don't waste your time on the manga, since there is no good comparison. But, the manga will go into a slight more depth about tanabe (though not much), and the anime definitly wraps up everything more cleanly,...whereass the manga takes 10 chapters to conclude (time when hachi visits tanabe (in the end of the anime) to where he goes to jupiter (end of manga).
