I just read the newest chapter of One Piece to find out in the end that Whitebeard was attacked by a Squad Pirate with a very long sword (LONGGGGG!!!) through the stomach.
So the question is why did he attack Whitebeard right after he said that they (The Squad Crew) would give their lives to save him?
My best bet is that it is a marine undercover who joined the Squad crew and got respect from the crew and secretly talking to Sengoku and timing this with Ace's execution to kill Whitebeard to end his era and life.
Or its just that this dude thinks that once he kills Whitebeard that everyone will fear and respect him.
But anyways this is just theory, so don't go flaming.

Also, do you think Whitebeard will live or die from the attack of this Squad dude?

It could be that Squad belonged to a crew that was destroyed by Whitebeard's crew. As a result, he has a grudge against Whitebeard, which leads him to stab Whitebeard with that LOOOOOONNGGGG sword. This war was the perfect time for him to get his revenge.
PS: I think Whitebeard will live.

another theory! so now we have 6 theories.. i forgot who create this theories, so i apologize first that i stated your theories^^
1. it was purely betrayal
2. squad want to be famous
3. doflamingo controls him
4. it was WB's plan
5. squado was WB's genetically son and he jealous of ace because WB care so much for ace
6. squado was another pirate's crew that destroyed by WB

He attacked WB because he hasnt got any day off and payment since he was recruited...... Or maybe because he was lazy and wanted to go home quickly, I get the feeling that war is going to take ages...

Chapter 563: One man, One heart
Marco rushes to Squad. Squad explains his actions.
During this war, Akainu contacted Squad, and told him that Whitebeard and Sengoku made a deal, that they won't kill Ace and the Whitebeard pirates in exchange for wiping out the New World pirates. (meaning, to offer them as sacrifice of war)

Squad's pirate crew was wiped out in the past by Roger.
Marines knew that, and that's why they contacted Squad, thinking that they'll be able to use him for their scheme.
Sengoku most likely revealed about Ace being Roger's son publically for this intent.
And as if to prove all this, the PXs were only attacking the New World pirates.
(into making Squad believe the marines' words)

Whitebeard realized everything that just took place.
"Even then, you are all still my sons!" He exclaims.

Marco sees how Whitebeard took the blow directly, and realizes how weakened Whitebeard had become since his prime.
Whitebeard responds to him by saying "You can't be the most powerful forever. There's only one heart for every man."
Whitebeard is enraged at the marines' dirty schemes.
The war resumes, and Sengoku gets ready.
