Unhappy Disappointing: Why am I not surprised?

"Once upon a time, there lived a girl that truly believed that weak female leads were far and scarce in the romance manga realm. She believed with all her heart that she would one day come across many romance mangas where the female leads can speak for themselves, act for themselves and be confident in themselves. But alas, many romance mangas she came across disappointed her greatly. She discovered that the world of romance manga is filled with dependent, weak-willed, and powerless female leads. Refusing to believe what she found, she decided to go on a journey in search of romance manga that would fulfill her needs.

One day, she came upon Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu. With excitement and anticipation, she began to read. However, she discovered with every page that she read, she began hoping, needing the female lead to grow a backbone and rely on herself. But try as she might, she could not finish the third chapter... and thus her dream of confident female leads in romance manga was forever shattered. And so, she went to bed a very annoyed and agitated woman."

That about sums it up. Although, I gotta say, I have read romance mangas with strong female leads before (such as my ABSOLUTE favourite romance manga Skip Beat! Some others include A Devil's Love Song and Obaka-chan). I don't think I'm asking for much am I? I mean, I'm NOT looking for a tsundere type girl or a girl who can kick ass. I just want a girl with a backbone that doesn't depend on the man for every little thing.

I'm seriously considering dropping this manga. Can anyone give me any reason (based on your further readings) as to why I shouldn't?

Also, does anyone have any other suggestions for mangas with a good female lead (i.e. independent at the very least)?

Oh and don't flame me just because you love the manga please. I'm just putting my opinion out there.

Thanks,
Poko

Default Minami Kanan...

Well this is Minami Kanan were talking about. The majority of her books contain female leads whom are not strong willed or minded. I also feel the same way as you. Some women are just stuck into the old ways. To each their own. I can't really think of any other great mangas where there is a strong female role, where she thinks for herself. Besides maybe The Wallflower and Kimi Ni Todoke, but the lead females have parts where they become submissive. :/

IA with everything. Um let's see....I'd suggest, "GOONG", "ASHITA NO OUSAMA" -- I think both girls are pretty independent for sure. If I remember correctly, "Anatolia story" is good, (it's long but...) really good...the herione IS really the heroine in that one. lol

And others "Basara", "Beauty Pop", "Bokura Ga Ita" -- (Nana has her moments but she comes around), "Crimson Hero"? I think that one was good. "He's Dedicated to Roses", "Hot Blooded Woman", "Boys over Flowers", "Hongane", "Kare Kano", "Paradise Kiss", "Nana", "Lovely Complex"

I guess I could go on but that might be enough for now...lol and maybe you've read them already?

SKIP BEAT is one of my faves too. I do like Kimi Ni Todoke even though the main character is rather sweet, but because I feel like there are others really pulling for her, it makes it easier. Some of the ones I mentioned have heroines who have their moments but wind up pretty much pulling through their issues.

I liked Koi wo Hajimemasu but then....I dunno...the writing for her changed somehow. It's happened for quite a few mangas too. Sigh.

All this authors main characters are like this. Hell almost all smut manga have weak and pathetic females. Its not even them being innocent or shy that bothers me. Its that they always fall for the jerk who made a fool out of them in the beginning. Its always forgiven because they start being a little nice and have a sad past. What happened to pride?

Better leads (both male and female):
- Dengeki Daisy
- Gokinjo Monogatari
-Monkey High
- Kimi Ni Todoke: I wouldnt call her strong but somehow I cant hate her. She's adorable in a way you kinda want to protect her. Plus it has awesome side characters. It helps the guy she falls for isnt a huge jerk.

Thanks for the replies!

I love the suggestions that you all gave and will definitely be looking into them. I'm already reading Kimi ni Todoke (although its not exactly a kickass female lead, she is still firm in the sense that she can stand up for herself and for her friends, Prier, i totally agree with the fact that I just can't help but love her LOL). I'm already already reading Kaicho wa maid-sama as well. I've seen Hana Yori Dango, Lovely Complex, KareKano and bits and pieces of Nana, all of which I loved.

I'm probably also with Prier on the fact that yes, it absolutely pisses me off that the girls always fall for the jerks that hurt them in the beginning. It annoys me to no end that even the tiniest bit of kindness show by these jerks are seen as absolutely fantastic by the girls and that somehow it seems to atone for their jerk-ish actions before. Pfft.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them! Glad I'm not the only one pulling my hair out while reading this manga lol.

Hehe, as a follower of Minami Kanan's works, I wasn't really surprised that her other female leads were weak and pathetic. The plots are bit a overdone as well. Get harassed and fall in love? Ick.

These kinds of mangas are exactly why I prefer reading shounen than shoujo. Hardly any romance, the guys are adorable and kick-ass, few girls that can potentially become annoying bitches. (And if there are females, they either don't play as big a role or they're the badass types.)
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of shoujo as well. But protagonists like Hibino piss me off, and she's not the first to do so. Ugh. Shounen ftw, IMO. XD
Recommendations of strong females in manga:
Dengeki Daisy
Purikyuu
Beast Master
Penguin Prince
Seishun Survival
Otokomae! Beads Kurabu
(all of those are Motomi Kyousuke's works. The man is a King of Shoujo. He's so good at it, he makes me cry. )
The Wallflower (Sunako is AWESOME!)

That is true. You should read:

Shugo Chara
The female lead has an outer facade (Cool and Spicy), but she then gets these guardian characters who represent characteristics that she wants to be. She gets angry a lot and it's really funny and cute.

Bloody Kiss
It's only one volume

Skip the first few pages, I have no idea how they are related to the story

TSUBASA WO MOTSU MONO
The female lead even tries to pay back her boyfriend for her food and all her other debts, so she is obviously not relying on him.

Yay more awesome suggestions! Thanks a lot!

I've read Beast Master (aww love Leo ) and I've seen Wallflower (Love Sunako too!)

I started Shugo Chara but didn't get very far for no particular reason other than i didn't see any romance factor in the first couple episodes (i know its not the main genre lol!)... I should probably give it another go though since It took me 5 times to actually get through the first three chapters of One Piece, now my favourite manga of all time haha!

Louisakiryuu, I totally agree! I hate romance mangas where the male lead harasses the female lead but then the chick falls in love with the jerk! WTF?! I'm interested in romance mangas where the male lead actually RESPECTS the female lead (such as Kaichou wa Maid-sama... Usui, although always teasing Misaki, really respects her... go Usui! and go Misaki!)

I've also started reading Mars. It is similar to Kimi ni Todoke in that although the female lead doesn't know how to kick ass, they have a soft determination and can stand up for what they believe. I would recommend it to you guys (reverse recommendation haha).

Thanks again for the suggestions! If you have any more, keep them coming!!!

Mars is good, despite Kira has moments in which you do wish to slap her around and tell her to get a grip you later find out a real source of her weakness, which is more deep rooted. Souryo has a thing for adding a full psychological insight in her characters which I love!
