So, if Dutch isn't a vet, then what the hell is he? Heck, for all we know, he could be the scariest dude in the whole damn thing!

Maybe he is a vet, after all. He just never said what side he was fighting on.

Battle of Dien Bien Phu was fought between Viet Cong and France. The French was devastated there.

There is always a Mercenary Group in the world called French Foreign Legion, which recruits people all around the world, as long as you are not too notorious.

I say he's lying about it to hide something he did in the past, maybe in 'Nam, maybe not, or he's hiding his real identity. Who wants to bet that the story does a complete 180 and turns Dutch into the final boss of the whole thing?

Black Lagoon is set in the nineties. The battle of Dien Bien Phu was in '54. Dutch would have to be older than god if that were the case, so I'm thinking the Foreign Legion theory is out.

But why? What reason would he have for pretending to be a Vietnam vet? I just don't get it. What does he have to hide? I mean, none of the Lagoon's crew members are saints. They wouldn't ditch him over a few skeletons in the closet; not with the ever-growing piles of bones in their own.

What if he really thinks he's a vet, but isn't? It would be the sheerest irony for the guy in this series who seems to be in the most control of himself to actually have the most screws loose. Nevertheless, I'm thinking that's a pretty weak theory too.

He probably has to have done something pretty heinous to lie about his background like that. I mean, what could he have been involved with that Revy hasn't already one-upped him on for sheer atrociousness?

Hmm... maybe it's not something he's done, but something he's planning to do.

There's going to be some kind of gut-wrenching twist that involves Dutch. I can feel it.

Khmmm
Does anybody remember that dutch made a most suspicous phone call near the start of the series.
You know after they recruited Rock just before that Thai mafia boss talks to him in his car.
Also.
Dutch met Revy in unclear circumstances plus remember the way he talked with that A-hhemmm Nazi in the Submarine arc?
Add 2+2 and logic dictates that Dutch is someone that is controlling the cores of Roanapur from the shadows.

Funny that you would mention that, because it reminds me of something. Remember when Balalaika essentially said "I owe Dutch" just before she and her soldiers went to put a stop to the gun battle between Roberta and the rest of the main cast early on in the series? The Lagoon Company's activities seem rather small-time at first glance, at least when compared to Hotel Moscow. There are probably other smuggling/mercenary outfits in town that have met with nearly as much success. Why would Balalaika single out Dutch in particular?
