So wait, I'm confused: Is this the same story as Onikakushi-hen, but sort of different?
Because it seems almost the same to me, but with subtle differences, eg the photographer and doctor are (as far as I've read) more important, there's the Shion/Mion part (which also confused me) etc.
Also, what happened with Mion and Shion? *is incredibly confused*

To answer your question the stories do appear similar because they are the same story but just told from a different angle.

I haven't read Higurashi no Naku Koro ni but I do know about the manga. The manga is divided into 3 different arcs.
The arcs are question, answer and sidestory. You are supposed to read the manga in order. The question arc offers the possible killers. The answer arcs answers those questions. Sidestoies are stories.

These are the arcs
The question arcs are: Onikakushi-hen, Watanagashi-hen, Tatarigoroshi-hen and Himatsubushi-hen.
The answer arcs are: Meakashi-hen, Tsumihoroboshi-hen, Minagoroshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen.
The side story arcs are: Onisarashi-hen, Yoigoshi-hen, and Utsutsukowashi-hen

So far Yen press who publishes the manga has only released. Onikakushi-hen volumes 1 and 2 and Watanagashi-hen volume 1. Watanagashi volume 2 is available now in certain places but won't be released everywhere until September 30th.

have finished translating Onikakushi in English. You'd have to order it from an importer shop (or download it somewhere I suppose), but links to that can be found on the site, and the game itself is fairly cheap.

For people who want to read the other 7 arcs of Higurashi in English, www.mangagamer.com licensed the games back in July and are supposed to release the first four question arcs soon, with the answer arcs coming a few weeks later. Of course, the question arcs were supposed to have been out for about three weeks already..., but I'll take their lateness as a sign that they're doing a really thorough job with the translations. In case anyone wants to know, mangagamer.com isn't region restricted, so provided you have the money for the games and a means of paying for them online, it shouldn't matter what country you're ordering it from.

Anyway, sorry I couldn't point you to much of any existing methods of getting the games, nut hopefully I helped.
You might just wanna watch the anime while you're waiting, though. It might not be the best adaptation ever, but if you aren't familiar with Higurashi and can't read Japanese, it'll give you a decent idea of the plot. Then, if you like it, you can play the VNs when they're available

MangaFox has all of Onikakushi-hen, all but one of Watanagashi-hen, up to chap 7 of Tatarigorishi-hen (but vol 2 is released in February), All of Himatsubushi-hen, none of Meakashi-hen, up to chap 4 of Tsumihoroboshi-hen, up to chap 7 of Minagoroshi-hen, up to chap 9 of Matsuribayashi-hen, All of Onisarashi-hen, All of Yoigoshi-hen, all of Utsutsukowashi-hen, none of Kokoroiyashi-hen and one of Hirukowashi-hen. Bear in mind that all of the unfinished ones except Tatarigoroshi-hen are being updated, and have had chaps released in the last month or so, and Minagoroshi-hen, Hirukowashi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen are still ongoing.
Tatarigorishi-hen was dropped by the scanslators and not picked up by any others as of yet.
I don't know if more chapters are available on other websites.
